New Canvas Features - Instructor Submit on Behalf of Students, Gradebook Sorting, and Equilibrium Button

We are pleased to announce a few new Canvas features that faculty should find very useful. The biggest update is that instructors can now submit a file upload on behalf of a student for an assignment through the Gradebook. The submission includes the timestamp and who submitted the assignment. Additionally, the instructor can submit multiple files at a time for a single student and submit beyond the availability date. No longer will instructors need to keep track of emails for students in need of an alternative means of submission. This is also an alternative to opening a past-due assignment just for one student. Again, this is only for assignments that require a file submission and only an instructor of the course will have permission to submit on behalf of the student.

How to Submit on Behalf of Student

In the Gradebook, locate the assignment and click the Grade Detail Tray icon of the student who you would like to submit on their behalf.

Next, click the Submit for Student link.

To upload a file from your computer, drag and drop a file [1], or browse your computer files by clicking the Choose a file to upload link. To submit the file, click the Submit button [2].

Note below that a timestamp and who submitted the assignment on behalf of the student will be clearly displayed in the Grade Detail Tray and in the Speedgrader.

Gradebook Sorting by Excused Submissions and Unposted Grades

We have another useful feature that you can find in the Gradebook. Instructors can now sort individual assignment columns and rows by excused submissions and unposted grades. This update provides instructors with more sorting options and improves efficiency when working in Gradebook columns.

To sort submissions by Excused or Unposted grades, select an assignment and click the Assignment menu [1]. Then, select the desired filter option [2].

sort by unposted filter applied

When the Sort By Unposted filter is applied, unposted grades are filtered to the top of the column.

Note: To filter unposted grades, the Grade Posting Policy must be set to Manually Post Grades.

sort by excused filter applied

When the Sort by Excused filter is applied, excused submissions are filtered to the top of the column.

Rich Content Editor Update - Equilibrium Button in the Equation Editor

Next is an update our Chemistry folks in particular should love. Now in the Rich Content Editor Equation area, an Equilibrium button is available. In the Equation Editor, click the Arrows tab [1], then click the Equilibrium button [2] to enter the desired equation.

We hope these new features are helpful! Please do not hesitate to reach out to EdTech@fscj.edu if you have any questions or comments about these or any other features in Canvas.
