AI Detection Now Available in Turnitin

Turnitin recently announced the preview of their new AI writing detection feature which will appear in their tools beginning April 4. Now, after seeing the plagiarism score, you can also see the percentage of text that Turnitin determines was likely generated by AI.

Our team’s initial testing found that the paper we created using Chat GPT and Bard both scored 100% in the AI score area, while a paper written without the assistance of AI scored 6%.

Although this tool is providing it’s score using the technology available, we recommend to use this as a starting point to have a conversation with any students submitting work that scores high in this area, and not necessarily rely on what score it provides.

Want to test this yourself before seeing how a student paper scores? Simply create a test assignment in your sandbox (do not check against Student Repository), then go to student view to submit any paper you have written or created using AI. After submitted, leave student view the Gradebook and SpeedGrader to view the Turnitin and AI scores. The first time you open the tool, you’ll even get a tour to show you around the new feature.
