Canvas Deploy: New Icon Maker and Late Labels

Instructure has monthly releases of its big new features, but from time to time there are small updates shared within Canvas Deploys. Canvas deploys, as opposed to Canvas Feature Releases, are released bi-weekly and contain code changes that are intended to fix bugs, clarify interface wording, improve performance, and prepare for new features. This month, a few small updates were share-worthy for everyone here at FSCJ.

Late Label Color Update

When students turn in their assignments late, they used to see a red Late icon next to their point total. This has led to some confusion for the students since both Missing and Late are red, so the Late name has now been changed to the color blue. This is not a change for faculty, as the late graded status was already blue.

Speedgrader - Concluded/Inactive Student Submission in Speedgrader Display Update

In Speedgrader, you can view Concluded or Inactive student submissions when using the Moderated Grading feature on an assignment. This update allows you to view moderated assignment submissions in Speedgrader for students who are inactive or concluded in a course.

Where is the primarily helpful? When you’re working with a student who is working on their incomplete after the course has concluded. The banner will appear over all other students in the Speedgrader except for the one student with the extension. Need to submit an incomplete to Canvas? Go to https://help.fscj.edu/ and submit a request!

New Icon Maker in the RCE

This update provides you the ability to incorporate simple icons for their courses without using an external tool. The Icon Maker allows simple, customized iconography to be created directly within the Rich Content Editor. Let’s take a look at how to access the Icon Maker in the Rich Content Editor.

Please note that the Icon Maker feature only supports predefined images at this time. The ability to upload custom images will be added in a future deploy.

  • In the Rich Content Editor (RCE), click the Icon Maker icon

  • To create new icons, click the Create Icon Maker Icon option [1]. The Saved Icon Maker Icons option is where prior icons are managed [2]

  • When the icon has been completed, click the Apply button to add it to the text box and Saved Icon Maker Icons.

  • When complete, icons display in the content editor. If you want, you can use the link button to make your buttons link to other pages or external content.
