Studio Now Has Automated Captioning!

Automatic Captioning Now In Studio!

Creating accessible content is an essential part of effective teaching in higher education. Canvas Studio now offers automatic captioning to make your media files more inclusive and user-friendly. This feature not only enhances accessibility for students with hearing impairments but also supports learning preferences for non-native speakers, visual learners, and others who benefit from captions.

Here’s a quick overview of how this feature works and why it’s important.

Why Use Automatic Captioning in Canvas Studio?

Automatic captioning in Canvas Studio is a great way to make your content more accessible and engaging for all students. Adding captions ensures your materials meet ADA and Section 508 standards, making them inclusive for students with hearing impairments. Captions can also boost engagement by helping students focus on key points and better retain what they’re learning. Plus, they give students the flexibility to watch your videos anywhere, whether they’re in a noisy café or a quiet space where they need to keep the sound off.

Key Features of Automatic Captioning

  • Ease of Use: Automatic captions are generated for any media uploaded to Canvas Studio and automatically published.

  • Customization: Edit captions for accuracy, ensuring they align with your intended message.

  • Language Options: Select from multiple languages based on your content needs. Auto-generated captioning is supported for the following languages.

    • : Arabic, Chinese (Simplified), Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish.

Best Practices for Captioning

While automatic captioning is a convenient feature, it is essential to review the captions for accuracy and alignment with your intended message (remember they are only around 85% accurate). To find the captions, simply navigate to the video you are looking for in Studio and select the Captions tab.

Clear, high-quality audio leads to better caption accuracy, so try to minimize background noise when recording. Additionally, encourage your students to use captions as a learning tool. Captions not only support accessibility but also enhance comprehension and retention, especially during complex lessons or for non-native speakers.

Start Enhancing Accessibility Today

Putting captions into your media content is a small step with a big impact. Canvas Studio’s automatic captioning simplifies the process, empowering you to create more inclusive, engaging learning experiences. Just remember to go into your captions and edit them if necessary!

Take a few minutes to try it out and see how easy it is to make your content accessible to all learners.
