Writing Great Gen AI Prompts

While it appears that new functions and applications of generative AI are announced daily, a crucial skill that users are attempting to master is the ability to craft an effective prompt. Understanding how to articulate your request to elicit the desired outcome from the tool is like knowing how to formulate precise queries when using search engines like Google. In this blog post, we've compiled (with some help from our own favorite AI chat tool) a set of tips that you can experiment with the next time you use your favorite AI tool.

1. Clarity and Specificity: Keep your prompt clear and specific. It's like asking for directions – the more specific you are, the better the guidance you get!

2. Contextual Information: Include relevant context. Think of it as giving a painter the background scene before they paint the main subject.

3. Incremental Prompts: If you're exploring a complex topic, start simple and then gradually increase complexity. It's like climbing a ladder – one step at a time.

4. Use Examples: Examples are like templates. They help the AI understand the format or style you’re looking for. It's like showing a picture to a baker when you want a custom cake!

5. Balanced Information: Provide enough information but don't go overboard. It's like seasoning food – too little and it's bland, too much and it's overwhelming.

6. Clear Intent: Make sure your goal is clear. Like telling a taxi driver exactly where you want to go.

7. Adjust Tone and Style: Tailor the tone and style of your prompt to fit your needs. It's like choosing the right outfit for an occasion.

8. Sequential Prompts: For complex tasks, build your prompts in a sequence. It's like following a recipe, step by step.

9. Avoiding Leading or Biased Questions: Frame questions neutrally. It’s like being a fair referee in a game, not favoring any side.

10. Iterative Refinement: Don't hesitate to refine your prompts based on the responses you get. It's like sculpting – gradually refining until you get the desired shape.

11. Creative Prompting: For creative tasks, think outside the box. Like painting, where sometimes splashes of color create the best art!

12. Understanding Limitations: Recognize what AI can and cannot do. It's like knowing the limits of your car; you can't drive it on water!

So, there you have it! A blend of precision, context, creativity, and a dash of pragmatism. Happy prompting!
