The Transition to Simple Syllabus

The time has come to say goodbye to the Blue Wave Syllabus Builder and step into the future of syllabus creation with Simple Syllabus. This new system will provide a consistent experience for our students, an easy to use creation tool for our instructors, and a robust search and reporting feature for supervisors and administration - all while enabling us to meet the requirements of the state.

A group of your FSCJ colleagues have spent several terms reviewing, then selecting the best tool for our school, integrating the data needed for the best experience with least effort, and shaping policies that support the mission and goals of the College. With the help of an incredibly supportive committee, we have created a top-level template that will auto-populate information that most instructors want and need within their syllabi. Then, we took it a step further to provide opportunity to instructors to add their own components, reorder the syllabi as it makes sense for their courses, and choose which content is available publicly beyond those which are required.

What to Expect in the Coming Terms

Summer 2024 - Training and Exploration

Throughout the summer, we will focus our efforts on training and creating awareness of the new tool. We will launch professional development courses and host office hours to provide support as users begin to familiarize themselves with Simple Syllabus. Additionally, we will reach out to deans and various departments to ensure each area’s unique syllabus needs are met.

Fall 2024: Training and Syllabus Creation

The fall term will focus on training opportunities and an abundance of communications, ensuring all stakeholders are well-prepared for the transition to Simple Syllabus. This period will see an intensified effort to train our instructors and address any remaining concerns. During the fall term, instructors will have access to begin editing their own syllabi in preparation for the Spring term transition to using Simple Syllabus.

Spring 2025: Go-Live for All

Finally, for the Spring 2025 term, we will reach a significant milestone as Simple Syllabus goes live for all users! This momentous occasion marks the culmination of months (years?) of hard work and dedication towards enhancing the syllabus creation process at FSCJ. At this time, the Blue Wave Syllabus Builder will no longer be available. Historic syllabi will be moved into the Simple Syllabus environment for students and instructors to be able to search or review.

Additional opportunities and communication will be shared throughout the next year, however if you have any questions, please email EdTech@fscj.edu and we will gladly reply.
